![]() ![]() “Thanks, I was thinking about doing a different monologue, but I figured it would make more sense to stick with the play.” He shrugged bashfully. ![]() “You, Jim Lake, have been the talk of the drama club since Friday.” A shy look of shock crossed over his face before it split into a wide grin. “Hi, Toby.” She waved back and then pointed at Jim. I know we have some classes together, but we’ve never really talked.” He gestured between the two of them, Toby smiled and brought his hand up to wave. “I’m Jim, and this is my best friend, Toby. Jim smiled at her warmly, his friend had a bemused expression and was looking between the two of them. “Nah, but he loves his bouncy chair.” Claire looked at him over her shoulder. “Wow, that’s, is that crawling age?” He sounded genuinely curious as they started to pull back into the middle of the street. “Enrique, six months last week.” She said proudly as she slung her leg over her bike and kicked out the stand to ride into the street. Jim nodded towards the sock as she folded it up and carefully tucked it into her pocket. Jim’s friend pulled up and stopped next to him as she picked up her backpack and slipped it on again. She looked down at the wadded up piece of fabric and unfolded it to find a sky blue baby sock patterned with little bunnies. “Oh, hey.” She said as she awkwardly pulled her hand out from the back of her shirt and waved. She looked up and spotted Jim as he glided to a stop in the street in front of her. “Hey, Claire!” A voice called out cheerily. She caught an odd piece of fabric with the tips of her fingers and wiggled it into her grasp. She pulled on her elbow to give herself more reach as she fished a hand down the back of her collar. The weight of it had made her aware of something lumpy caught between her shoulders. She slung her bag off her back and dropped it down to the sidewalk. Toby bit back a snort as Jim started peddling again.Ĭlaire stopped at the corner and kicked down the stand of her bike. “Shut up, be cool.” Jim hissed back desperately. “Please tell me you’ve done something besides staring and drooling in your future travels.” He groaned. ![]() Toby looked at Jim, then back at Claire, then back to Jim. The only thing that was moving was Claire Nuñez walking her bike down the road that led up to her house. He looked around urgently for the reason they stopped but he didn’t see anything. Toby quickly followed suit and fishtailed to a stop beside him. As he turned back to watch the road he hit the brakes and slid to a stop. “I don’t know, that doesn’t sound like much fun!” Jim looked over his shoulder to shout back at him, obnoxious knowing smile plastered all over his face. “You have to tell me about my future girlfriend!” He called as they passed by the shortcut through the woods. Jim smirked over his shoulder and popped a wheelie, it didn’t actually slow him down much. “Hey! Get back here!” He yelled after Jim, cursing the fact that his bike was a classic and didn’t have as many gears as Jim’s did. Jim knows if I get a girlfriend! He kicked off and started peddling as fast as he could. Toby stared after him for a few seconds before his brain caught up. Look for love with someone because of who they are, not what they look like.” He rhapsodized while clutching his heart, he winked at Toby and took off down the street. “I think you need to look deep in your heart. Jim brought his bike to a stop beside him. I just think you’d have to be pretty desperate to see that and think ‘boyfriend material’.” Toby scoffed, though he had to admit it was nice to see Jim in a better mood. “I do, but I’ve also seen what that place has to offer. “ Believe in true love, Tobes.” Toby rolled his eyes as Jim saddled up on his bike and took off on a lazy loop around the cul-de-sac waiting for Toby to do the same. “Why would I, my plan is working.” Jim sang giddily as he leaned forward and knocked on Toby’s helmet. “You still haven’t come up with a better plan?” Toby raised one judgmental brow as he tucked his lunch away. Great, they were still living in a fantasy land where Jim wanted his mom to date a troll. “My mom asked if Strickler was married.” His smile grew even wider as he said the words. He hummed happily as he held out a brown paper bag towards Toby. “You seem happy this morning.” Toby watched as Jim glided out of his garage, tipping his bike so he could balance on one peddle like a scooter. ![]()
